Washington D.C. - The HNBA Legal Education Fund ("The Fund") announces award of Mario G. Obledo Memorial Scholarship to Oliver Rodriguez from University of San Diego School of Law.
The Fund received over 100 applications for the Obledo Memorial Scholarship which is funded at $10,000 as a single award to a law student. “Oliver Rodriguez was selected as the first recipient for the Scholarship because he exemplified the commitment of Mario Obledo to advancing the Latino community. Mr. Rodriguez clearly stood out among hundreds of applicants due to his work in creating a Guide for Minority Law School Candidates – a manual for historically underrepresented students to assist them in navigating the law school application process,” said Benny Agosto, President of the HNBA Legal Education Fund.
“In addition to announcing our Obledo Scholarship winner, the HNBA Legal Education Fund is also very excited to announce that this year’s Legal Education Action Program (LEAP) will be held June 21-27, 2015 in Houston, Texas,” continued President Agosto. LEAP is a fully-funded week long summer “law camp” for minority students.
The Fund's Board of Directors established the Mario G. Obledo Memorial Scholarship in 2010, shortly after Dr. Obledo's passing earlier that same year. Obledo was a remarkable champion for Latino civil rights and the development of Latino attorneys. He co-founded the HNBA and MALDEF and led several civil rights organizations, both Hispanic and mainstream. The Fund's scholarship program is a fitting tribute to Obledo and is awarded to a Hispanic law student that exemplifies the life, aspirations, and commitments of Mario Obledo.
